A new mural downtown celebrates the Rappahannock River, the city of Fredericksburg, the city’s romantic relationship with Kathmandu, Nepal, and powerful, unbiased women—all on two partitions within River Rock Clothes shop.
“Everybody who will come in listed here has a story about the river,” explained artist Jennifer Manfre, an artwork trainer at Wilderness Elementary in Spotsylvania. “I hope people coming in can see on their own in the mural.”
Manfre will work on weekends at River Rock, which sells materials and gear for outside and river-based mostly adventuring and is celebrating eight decades in organization in downtown Fredericksburg.
Owner April Peterson preferred to do “something special” with two blank walls within the store and Manfre, who was wanting for a way to get again into becoming an artist in addition to teaching artwork, broached the thought of a mural.

The two gals collaborated on what the mural would seem like. Peterson preferred it to be “an expression of the store” and to incorporate the river, Virginia flora and fauna, the town of Fredericksburg and Nepal.
Peterson and her partner have traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal—which is just one of Fredericksburg’s Sister Cities—several situations to hike in the encompassing Annapurna mountain range. On their initially visit, they formed a connection with a school they encountered on one particular of their treks.
Considering the fact that then, the Petersons have contributed funding to the maintenance and repairs of the university, setting up new flooring and photo voltaic panels and repairing the unpaved path to the college so students could get there safely and securely.
“It’s a good mission for our buyers,” Peterson claimed.
Manfre stated she nervous about becoming ready to convey all of Peterson’s vision.
“I would attract and erase, attract and erase,” she stated. “It was challenging to get it all in there so it flowed.”
But Peterson explained she “knew Jennifer would get my eyesight.”
“And it’s a million times much better than I even believed it would be,” she claimed.
The mural, which Manfre begun painting in July and which she hopes to complete early this month, usually takes viewers on a journey from the Blue Ridge mountains, the place the Rappahannock rises close to Front Royal, to Motts Operate Reservoir, by Fredericksburg to Metropolis Dock and then to Kathmandu by plane.
It depicts dogwood blossoms, a river otter, the railroad bridge and Gary the Goose. Considering that River Rock Clothing store is a dog-friendly shop and most of the workers are doggy proprietors, a pet dog capabilities prominently.
The mural also involves figures kayaking and paddle-boarding on the river. Manfre selected to paint female figures—since the keep is woman-owned and female-staffed—and to present them from back, so viewers can picture themselves making the most of the river.
“Women can get out and do matters on their own on the river,” Manfre mentioned.
Peterson claimed she hopes the mural will persuade viewers to examine the river and the recreational options it has to provide, as effectively as means they can maintain it and approaches they can look for relationship with other international locations and cultures.
“I hope it conjures up folks,” she explained.
