In today’s Kea Youngsters News, we fulfill two Golden Bay metal forgers who are passing on the historical art of blacksmithing to youngsters.

Pat Baker and Tatiana von Kastan from Hell’s Fireplace Forges run workshops during the university vacations – and little ones adore it.

Reporter Olea Weiss, 8, of Collingwood Region University, frequented their Onekaka workshop to see how it’s completed.

“Forging is the method of heating metallic and reshaping it,” Pat describes.

To bend it, the steel has to be heated in a fireplace right up until it reaches a crimson-incredibly hot temperature of 800-1000C.

Pat claims this can make the steel softer and easier to condition.

Forging was traditionally employed to transform metal into applications, these as knives and hammers, as well as weapons and jewelry, Tatiana provides, prior to offering Olea the probability to have a go herself.
