Selected as just one of ten initiatives for the Intercontinental Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Competition, João Gonzalez’s “Ice Merchants” is a frigid and precarious tale about a father and son. As the title suggests, the pair sells the frozen product, whilst to attain the current market in the village beneath, they have to seize their parachutes and leap from their cliff-facet house every single day.
Gonzalez, who also executed and composed the accompanying soundtrack, created “Ice Merchants” in a minimal fashion equivalent to his award-winning “Nestor” and “The Voyagers.” He shares about the new film in a statement: “Something that has always fascinated me about animation cinema is the flexibility it provides us to produce a thing from scratch. Surrealistic and weird scenarios and realities can be used as a metaphorical instrument to speak about a thing that is frequent to us in our much more ‘real’ truth.”
