Who are you and what do you do?

I am Amy, the coloured pencil artist driving Headspace Illustrations. I live on the east coastline of Canada, with my partner of 23 yrs and our two beautiful youngsters.

Why do you do what you do?

I’m motivated to continue my journey in artwork for numerous factors. From a useful standpoint, it’s a way I can aid my relatives economically whilst operating from my individual home studio. Remaining just a hug away from my younger youngsters has been the best conclusion I could have produced. Practicing artwork has also had a good outcome on my mental overall health, it’s an exercising in persistence, and a peaceful second to replicate on the intricacies of our entire world around us.

You use so lots of lively shades, do you have any that you favor?

I’m most definitely drawn to the organic vibrancy observed in florals, birds, and gemstones, so it is tough to choose a most loved. But likely on how short all my green coloured pencils are, I in all probability use them most usually.

What evokes your artwork?

We’ve built our home just outdoors the city, on a spacious wooded great deal around the river. Remaining in this article is a slower speed of existence, exactly where we get to halt and observe in wonderment the flora and fauna all-around us. For the duration of the warmer months, for instance, we get up at the crack of dawn to check beneath our outside the house light-weight to come across hundreds of colourful moths. We keep them in sheer astonishment, choose images, and then launch them back again into the forest. I’ve illustrated a range of them, and hope to do additional.

How and when did you get into artwork?

Right after virtually 20 many years of no artwork, I stumbled throughout a coloured pencil portrait that sparked in me a strong want to draw once more. Artwork was some thing I did in substantial school, and did not decide on up a pencil all over again right until 2015. I was not overly assured in my qualities, but I decided to take a image of my tiny boy’s eye, and consider to attract it in graphite. It was exhilarating to see a thing occur alive ahead of my eyes. I needed to test a thing in color, and shortly thereafter my partner surprised me with my very first set of colored pencils. I haven’t stopped coloring since.

How has your observe improved more than time?

When I first began, I illustrated far more singular objects, but as my confidence grew, I pushed my creativeness further into a lot more associated compositions. Despite the fact that I’ve sustained a equivalent aesthetic, I’ve improved in facts and method.

What’s your favorite piece of artwork that you have developed? Why?

Unique assignments have certain pieces of my coronary heart in them, in this sort of unique techniques that I don’t think I can favor one over the relaxation. Lately a pal went out of his way to assistance our household with ending up a renovation venture that was so out of our achieve to do. I preferred to present our immense gratitude by illustrating his hand-tied fishing lures. I at the time amazed my partner with a drawing of our sweet pug that died, which I cried by means of the total illustration. Functioning on commemorative items for some others is a sensitive process, and I sense honored to be questioned. Remaining commissioned to function on a variety of national models, and looking at that perform in stores have been unimaginable ordeals. I connect my emotions to every single piece and I’m not positive it is achievable to quality just one emotion more than yet another.

What is the best piece of artwork assistance you have been provided?

Artwork is not a competition. You are exceptional, apply your uniqueness. Also, check out just about every piece as an experiment, if it does not flip out as you hoped, it’s okay, it was just an experiment.

What’s a person art suggestion/procedure you can share with us that you locate truly beneficial?

Employing a marker foundation or Panpastels as your initial layer beneath colored pencil preserves the tooth of your paper so you can go wild with the rest of your levels.

Do you have any top secret guidelines or tactics you use to salvage a piece when you make a error?

I’m very professional in getting to salvage parts, all these problems, or even just a change of heart, have taught me it is feasible to resolve. In some cases the composition wants a artistic adjustment. In the case of my Coleman lantern, my marker base bled on to the white history, so I additional a piece of rope tied to the tackle. Being open up-minded and adaptable to the approach can result in a additional gratifying artwork piece than you originally considered.

What is your beloved Strathmore paper? Why?

So far, my complete favourite is Strathmore Blended Media 400 Series. It checks all the packing containers for me. The vellum floor is the excellent total of texture to grip my pigment, but smooth enough to continue to keep my edges clear and crisp. The thickness can handle hefty-handed coloring, and the web pages remain flat. The colour is dazzling white, it’s obtained easy, tear-away webpages, and it’s obtainable from my local, little business, artwork store.

That becoming said, I have nonetheless to do a complete illustration on the Strathmore Blended Media 500 Sequence. I have also just begun an illustration on Strathmore Bristol 500 Series, for the to start with time, and it is DREAMY.

What artwork products could you not are living with out?

A need to-have for me is a folding desktop easel. Working upright has corrected my posture and practically removed neck and shoulder suffering.

What types of colours are you drawn to for your art and why?

Pink and environmentally friendly, by natural means. People are the hues I encompass myself with in my very own house, it feels like household.

Who are your greatest influences (or who were when you started out undertaking art)?

MaryJo Hoffman is a skilled photographer who sees elegance in the small and uncomplicated issues she collects on walks. She arranges the pieces with brilliant white backgrounds, captures them, and aptly phone calls them her Continue to assortment. I adore her focus to depth and her generous spirit. She graciously supplied her Bluejay wing image to me to use as a reference, and I couldn’t refuse! She was an inspiration then and even now is.
